The appointment of Daryl Quinlivan AO as the new Chair of the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) Board has been welcomed by Shadow Minister for Water, Senator Perin Davey.

“Daryl Quinlivan brings a wealth of experience to this vital role, and I congratulate him on his appointment,” Senator Davey said.

“His deep understanding of water resource management, public administration, and the challenges facing the Murray-Darling Basin will be critical in guiding the next phase of the Basin Plan’s implementation.”

Senator Davey highlighted Mr. Quinlivan’s past contributions to water governance and agriculture, noting his time with the former Murray-Darling Basin Commission and as Secretary of the Department of Agriculture.

“Mr. Quinlivan’s expertise in balancing competing demands for this essential resource is reassuring at a time when trust, transparency, and collaboration are needed more than ever,” Senator Davey said

Senator Davey also took the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Sir Angus Houston, the outgoing MDBA Chair.

“Sir Angus Houston’s leadership has brought stability to the MDBA during difficult times. He took the time to meet with and listen to Basin communities on their home turf, ensuring their voices were heard throughout the Basin Plan process,” Senator Davey said.

“His inclusive approach and commitment to delivering the Basin Plan will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the Opposition, I thank him for his service and wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Senator Davey urged the Albanese Government to support the new Chair and the MDBA Board in navigating the ongoing challenges facing the Basin, including the need for realistic timelines, robust community consultation, and effective water sharing arrangements.

“Ensuring a sustainable Murray-Darling Basin requires bipartisan commitment and genuine engagement with all stakeholders. I look forward to working constructively with Mr. Quinlivan and the entire Board to achieve these shared goals,” concluded Senator Davey.
