Six local organisations across the Hunter will share in over $20,000 to deliver projects to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans including a new Memorial Wall and garden at Singleton Heights Public School.
Announcing the successful recipients of the Saluting our Service Grants, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Andrew Gee commended the six successful Hunter applicants.
“It is clear from the number and calibre of applications that our communities continue to look for new and improved ways to commemorate the service of our veterans, with many exploring new technologies and reaching new audiences.
“We received a huge number of applications from ex-service organisations, local councils, schools, and historical societies which show just how important commemoration is to Australians.
“The Saluting Their Service grants program ensures Australia’s wartime history is preserved and the sacrifice of those who have served during wars, conflicts and peace operations is remembered.”
Senator for New South Wales, Perin Davey, said the commemorative projects would continue the tradition of remembrance, and she looks forward to seeing the finished work.
“Home to the Australian Infantry Museum, the Hunter has a proud association with our defence forces and commemorating those who have served from our communities,” Senator Davey said.
The six projects to commemorate the service and sacrifice from those in the Hunter region include:
- Kearsley Community Dawn Service Incorporated: Installation of a flagpole in the remembrance garden at Kearsley Community Hall.
- Cessnock City Council: Design and produce a brochure listing War Memorials in the Cessnock area as well as the production of a video showcasing War Memorials in the Cessnock area.
- Trustees of Church Property for the Diocese of Newcastle: Restore a First World War Red Ensign and display it in Christ Church Mt Vincent.
- Singleton Heights Public School Parents and Citizens Association: Construct a Memorial Wall and Garden area around Singleton Heights Public School’s existing flagpole.
- Greta RSL Sub-Branch: Contribute to the publication of a book about local First World War service personnel.
The Australian Government is providing more than $1.5 million to 129 community groups across the country in this round of the Saluting their Service program.
