JOINT MEDIA RELEASE

Faster internet is coming to areas in the Hunter thanks to upgrades to the NBN Co’s Fibre to the node (FTTN) technology.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher, said this would support residents of the region, whether that be families or those working from home or local businesses.

New South Wales Senator Perin Davey was in Singleton this week and heard from the Local Council how important fast and reliable internet access is for the region’s future.

“Locals within Cameron Park, Edgeworth, Hunterview and Singleton Heights will benefit from this upgrade,” Senator Davey said.

“This will make doing business online, working from home or schooling faster which has flow on benefits and makes these regions more attractive for those looking for a regional tree change.

“I am looking forward to seeing future areas released for ultra-fast speed upgrades in the coming months and seeing the community take advantage them.”

Minister Fletcher said the upgrades are an important milestone in delivering the Government’s $4.5 billion NBN network enhancements.

”We are pleased to see these upgrades begin at scale to offer ultra-fast broadband of up to 1 Gigabit speeds,” Minister Fletcher said.

“Blazing fast broadband speeds like this will enable businesses to access greater productivity gains and access to new markets, and families can enjoy the use of multiple devices, including working and learning from home.”

Minister for Finance, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, said NBN Co are continuing to meet the changing needs of Australians through these network upgrades.

“Over the last two years, the expectations in the community and their reliance on the NBN have changed significantly. In response, NBN Co is pushing more fibre deeper into its network to bring ultra-fast speeds to meet these expectations,” Minister Birmingham said.

“These upgrades will allow 8 million homes, or 75% of premises in the fixed line footprint to have access to ultra-fast speeds by 2023.”

Eligible customers will be able to place orders with participating retailers.

NBN Co will make further announcements throughout the year as it completes the design and construction of its Local Fibre Network upgrades in suburbs and towns across Australia.
